Solar Comedones Extracted, aka Favre Racouchot
Solar comedones are open and closed comedones, aka blackhead and whiteheads, but these are not seen in teenagers, as a part of acne that is most common in this age group.
Solar comedones are blackheads and whiteheads that occur later in life (usually seen in people in their 50s and higher), due to chronic cumulative sun damage/exposure over their lifetime. This is why we see them most commonly on the face in areas that receive the most sun exposure. The temples, around the eyes, the forehead, the nose. Around the eye area there is a specific name for solar comedones.. the condition here is called Favre Racouchot.
Solar comedones are benign, and not of medical concern. However, many people don’t like them and would like them removed/extracted. Usually I use a comedone extractor to remove these, but often I have to make a slight nick in the surface of the skin in order to extract the comedones cleanly, without heavily traumatizing the skin. Also, I often locally anesthetize the area so that the procedure is more comfortable.
Here are just a handful of patients I have seen in the last month, who have had their solar comedones extracted. Thank you so much for watching!
