Mosquitos are most active around dusk and dawn, so that’s when youre most likely to get bit by one.

Male mosquitos are actually harmless, and only feed on water and nectar, female mosquitos feed off of blood.

Female mosquitos use scent, chemicals in a persons sweat and exhaled carbon

dioxide to lock onto a target. Once she finds a victim, she inserts her proboscis

her needle-like mouth) into a persons skin and sucks their blood through it. The

bump, itchiness and redness around a mosquito bite is actually caused by your

body’s immune system reacting to proteins in the mosquitos saliva that prevent

blood clotting while they suck.

Mosquito eggs hatch in warm weather, and lay dormant during winter months.

Mosquitos don’t need to lay eggs in still water, like many people believe, but they

do need water to hatch.

Preventing mosquito bites

Its actually believed that genetics account for %85 mosquito bite susceptibility,

but there are still some things you can do to avoid bites.

Wear light clothing rather than dark colors, because dark colors absorb heat and

mosquitos are attracted to heat.

Avoid harsh chemical bug repellents and opt for natural remedies instead.

Try sticking cloves into halved limes and setting them in the area you want to

deter bugs from.

Citronella can also be used to repel mosquitos. Citronella is a plant that smells

like lemon, and the oil extracted from the plant is commonly used in bug

repellants. You can burn citronella candles or apply drops of citronella oil to your skin to deter annoying mosquitos.

Certain plants also repel mosquitos. Geranium, peppermint, basil, lavender, lemon balm, catnip and citronella are all known to piss off mosquitos. Planting these near your patio may help.

Unfortunately, nothing can guarantee a mosquito-less summer. When they do

bite, these tricks will help reduce itchiness and inflammation.

Run a spoon under hot water, then hold the spoon against your bite for a couple of minutes. The heat from the spoon interferes with the protein injected into your skin by the mosquito and stops the itching.

Apply honey to the bite. Honey contains antibacterial, antiseptic and anti-

inflammatory properties that will sooth the bite and disinfect it.

Putting scotch tape over the bite will prevent you from scratching it and making it worse.

The anti inflammatory properties in aloe vera will calm the itching. Try freezing aloe in an ice cube tray for a particularly soothing treatment.

Apply rubbing alcohol to disinfect the bite. The stinging sensation of alcohol will also distract from the itching.

Rub the bite with a basil leaf. Basil is known to repel mosquitos, and contains anti-inflammatory properties.
