SPOTTING

Spotting can be a great concern for women especially if you are clueless as to what caused it. In this video, you will understand more what spotting is, its causes and tips to prevent it.

WHAT IS SPOTTING?

Spotting is bleeding between periods. It can be anything from a light drop of blood, to a heavier flow like your period.

BLOOD

Tinged discharge is also considered spotting, but if the discharge is dark yellow-ish or smells gross, there could be a problem – like an infection.

Spotting is usually normal and sometimes occurs during ovulation because estrogen levels drop when the ovary releases an egg. It could also signal the start of your period. It’s hard to tell if there’s any specific meaning to your spotting – when you get it, and how you get it is specific to your own body and likely isn’t reason for concern.

CAUSES

The hormones, estrogen and progesterone, control your cycle. If they get out of balance, your cycle could become irregular and cause spotting. Thyroid problems, ovary problems or inconsistency in birth control pills can contribute to hormone imbalance.

Sometimes stress can cause your cycle to be irregular. This can result in spotting during your period. Spotting can also be caused by irregularity in the lining of the uterus because the lining becomes fragile.

Spotting may also be a sign of pregnancy, or a sign of labor. Spotting can also happen during perimenopause as your body transitions into not having periods.

COLOR

The color of blood spotting can tell you how fresh the blood is.

Bright red – fresh
Pink – diluted fresh blood
Brown – days old blood
Black – very old.

NOT NORMAL IF:

– you have heavy bleeding between periods for more than a couple of days
– you have light spotting for 3 cycles
– heavy bleeding after sex
– it isn’t normal to your typical pattern

THINGS TO DO TO PREVENT SPOTTING

1. Take your birth control as prescribed
2. Reduce aspirin intake. Aspirin is a blood thinner and can worsen spotting.
3. Maintain a healthy body weight.
4. Manage stress
