People with severe acne that do not respond to other medications are most likely to take Accutane. It is the brand name isotretinoin, a class of drugs called retinoids. However, all acne patients should carefully consider the several disadvantages of isotretinoin. The drug is not only expensive but it also has some significant effects. Possible side effects include inflammation of the lip and mucous membrane of the eye; dry mouth, nose, or skin; nosebleeds; muscle aches; photosensitivity; and, rarely, decreased night vision. The more serious side effects include an increase in blood cholesterol, lipid, and triglyceride levels and abnormal liver enzymes.

The unfortunate downside is that I had a relapse after taking Accutane and the long term cure rate is actually a lot lower than what I expect.

For so many years, I have struggled with acne. I’ve gotten so many questions about my skincare regimen and what I do to take care of and deal with problematic and challenged skin.

If you are struggling with breakouts, hang in there. I know it can be rough on your self-esteem but try out different things and see what works best for you. Just don’t give up!
