Fact: 90 percent of the skin wrinkles that dermatologists treat in patients are from excessive exposure to the sun, not from the normal process of aging so ** PLEASE WEAR SUNSCREEN!!! ** Also, 50 to 80 percent of skin damage caused by the sun occurs in childhood so if you are young cover up your skin and if you have a child make sure to apply sunscreen to protect them! Severity of physical aging depends on a few factors: genetics, exposure to pollution (especially exposure to smoke).People who work in professions that expose them to sunlight also tend to form more wrinkles. These jobs include fishermen, farmers, sailors, gardeners construction workers etc.
The outermost layer of skin is the epidermis, which is made up mainly of dead, hardened skin cells that protect the body from outside elements. The next layer is the dermis, which contains a kind of protein called collagen (gives skin firmness), as well as elastin fibers that give skin its elasticity and its plumpness. Next is hypodermis or subcutaneous layer, which is a layer of fats. Wrinkles form in both the epidermis and the dermis — and their appearance varies depending on the layer in which they form. As you age, your epidermis loses its ability to hold on to moisture, which leads to fine lines in the skin’s surface. The dermis begins to thin due to loss of collagen and elastin fibers as well as reduced production of these two components of the layer. This is the start of wrinkle formation. At the same time, fat starts to disappear from the skin’s deepest layers, which leads to sagging
Cells divide more slowly in older skin, making the dermis thinner and less able to hold moisture. The hypodermis, the part of our skin where fat is stored, begins to loosen. Your skin becomes less elastic, losing the ability to stretch and spring back into a firm position
In the dermis, collagen regeneration does not take place as efficiently.
Sun exposure also causes sunspots and freckles
UVB radiation damages the top layers of the epidermis while UVA damages even deeper in the dermis. Smoking and pollution give skin a rough appearance, uneven skin town, patchiness, thinner skin and deep wrinkles. Wrinkles can also form because of free radicals. Sources of free radicals include air pollution, pesticides, poor diet, stress, chronic lack of sleep, chronic lack of exercise, caffeine, sugar, alcohol, cigarette smoke and unprotected sun exposure and tanning salons. To combat free radicals eat foods with lots of antioxidants. Some of the best sources of antioxidants are: red, kidney, and pinto beans, blueberries, cranberries, artichokes, blackberries and lots of other berries. You should avoid unprotected contact with the sun, however, you should not avoid the sun altogether. Sunshine is a good source of vitamin d3, which is necessary for strong bones.
To prevent wrinkles you can… exercise, use creams, use sunglasses and glasses to avoid squinting, wear sunblock and DRINK WATER!
You can take some supplements to aid in retaining skin’s elasticity…
Vitamin C supplements to help build collagen, calcium or magnesium to help strengthen skin, zinc to repair skin, Omega-3 fatty acid supplements to keep skin moist and fights against free radicals.
