How to tighten loose skin

When you decide to go on a weight lost journey and you finally start shedding all those extra lbs you’ll probably feel great because that is a big accomplishment. However your skin might be looking a little saggy because the layer of fat underneath your skin went down which caused a lot of your skin’s support to disappear. When you lose weight gradually at 1-2 lbs a week, your skin is likely to keep up with your weight lost but anything faster may have caused loose skin. Your skin gets this way because it doesn’t have enough elasticity to shrink as fast as you are. People who get weight loss surgery are more prone to this problem, but it can also affect people who go on extreme diets.

For people who have small amounts of loose skin, these 5 tips will help you get speed up the process or keep your skin from getting loose while you are losing weight:

1. Start doing weight resistant exercises to build up muscles to give you more tone and definition. When the loose skin is not extreme, this extra tone will help fill in areas of loose skin. Make sure you target the areas that have a lot of loose skin because those are the muscles that you want to build up the most. If your chest area is problematic do push-ups to build up chest muscles.
2. Stay hydrated all the time
A main cause of loose skin is dehydration and it also can make it worse. Your skin needs proper hydration to stay elastic, that’s why a common dehydration test is to pinch your skin on the top of your hands, and if your skin takes a long time to go back down then you’re dehydrated.
3. Increase skin elasticity with a healthy diet
Certain combinations of foods and vitamins have been shown to increase the elasticity of skin such as eating foods high in zinc, selenium found in salmon and seafood, vitamin c found in fruits and vegetables, and carotenoids which is a pigment found in brightly colored fruits and vegetables.
4. Nourish Skin
Exfoliate your skin with sea salt baths or use a loofah to increase circulation to your skin. Use body lotions or creams that contain vitamin C, vitamin E, aloe vera, hyaluronic acid, and Vitamin A because all these ingredients play a role in helping your skin increase collagen and elastin formation.
5. Be patient
Skin can only get stretched to a certain point, and elastin can take time to form back. Usually it can take a year of good muscle training, exercise , and a healthy diet for your skin to tighten up, and it’s hard to tell if your skin will be able to bounce back all the way so a year is a good gauge to see how much skin will tighten back up. If your skin has been stretched out for years and you lost a lot of weight fast, you might have to consider surgery to remove excess skin from your body. I would say that this is a last resort because surgery has a long recovery process and with any surgery there is a risk of getting an infection or other complications.
