Sun Exposure and Acne Scars DML

Hi everybody! Today on Draw My Life Friday, we are going to be talking about the sun and how it affects the skin and acne. I know this is a hot topic right now because it’s Summer and you’re all out having fun in the sun but it’s also very important to discuss.

While the sun is a great source of Vitamin D, it is extremely important to limit your exposure. Trust me, it will save you in the long run.

In the skin’s outer epidermal layer are cells that contain melanin. Melanin is a pigment that protects skin from the sun’s UV rays. Those with very fair and low-level melanin skin are much more likely to be damaged by the sun.

The sun’s ultraviolet rays deeply penetrate the skin, damaging and killing cells. Over time, this repeated cellular damage can turn into skin cancer, the most common AND PREVENTABLE cancer. Skin cancer affects over 2 million Americans, each year.

Repeated sun exposure also damages elastin fibers, causing the skin to age prematurely. Later in life, the skin will begin to sag, stretch, and wrinkle, adding a decade to your face. Is 30 the new 40? NO. Wear sunscreen!

Protecting your skin is crucial AND easy. Wearing a daily moisturizer with SPF is a great place to start. Always, always, always reapply sunscreen if you’re spending a lot of time outside in the sun. Bring a hat or umbrella to protect yourself from direct UV rays.

Now, I’m sure many of you are curious about how the sun affects acne and acne scars.

About 10 to 15 minutes a day of sun exposure can be beneficial for acne, especially on the body. However, anything longer than that can seriously harm your skin and make the acne worse.

Sunlight causes inflammation which can cause hyperpigmentation, or darkening, of your scars. We do not want that, so be diligent in preserving your skin.

The bottom line is that you need to protect your skin every single day. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. The skin is your largest organ, treat it accordingly!
