Is hyperpigmentation different from acne scars? PIH or Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation is the discoloration on the skin after acne or pimples caused by excess melanin. Usually dark or red in color but are not indented or pitted – just a flat surface. Acne scars, however, are pitted or indented skin due to the damage in collagen fibers when your skin tried to repair or restructure that is of a breakout.
It occurs when melanin – the pigment that gives skin, hair, and eyes their natural color – is overproduced in certain areas. This causes dark spots or patches on the skin. These patches can be light brown to black and will often vary in terms of size and shape. Freckles, age spots, and post-acne marks are all examples of hyperpigmentation.
