Gopro vid, excising a keratoacanthoma on the back. For medical education- NSFE.

For medical education- NSFE. This is an elderly patient who has a keratoacanthoma on her back, which is a type of squamous cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer. These typically grow rather quickly, kind of coming up like a “volcano” with a center core like a scab or in this case, a cutaneous horn (looks like an animal’s horn, such as a ram’s horn, in the center).
These are skin cancers that usually are excised because they can grow bigger quickly (actually sometimes, they also regress quickly), and margins around it need to be taken to decrease the chance of recurrence. Here I excise the keratoacanthoma, and place buried vertical mattress suture, and then superficial running subcuticular suture.
She tolerated the entire procedure very well, and she should do great! Thank you for watching!
