EEEWWYY EYE BOOGERS, CRUSTY EYES, EYE GUNK!
What causes that crusty eye stuff that you get in the morning? Some people call it sleep, eye boogers, crusties or whatever. It goes by different names but it’s made with the same things.
Today I’ll tell you about crusty eyes, what it’s made of, why it happens, and when is it not normal.
The crusty things around your eye after your nap or night of sleep is made out of old cells, bacteria, mucus, dirt particles, and oil from the eyelids that have been collected over time when your eyelids rub against your eyes. Every time you close your eyes, it pushes all that junk into the inner corners of your eyes and around the lower lid. The mucus comes from natural eye discharge that’s called rheum. Sounds lovely doesn’t it?
Usually during the day you shouldn’t have problems with eye crust because all that mixture of mucus ,cells, oils and dirt are constantly getting washed away or tucked into the inner corners of your eyes where your tear ducts will take it away. When you are asleep, your eyelids aren’t moving anymore so that crust build up continues for hours, and dries up.
This stuff usually isn’t a big deal because most of us wake up and wash up in the morning so that the majority of people don’t see it. Even if you’re going to be waking up next to someone super cute, chances are, they’ll have the eye crusts too and you can both admire each other’s crusty eyes. Or not.
When you get up and find crust around your eyes try not to rub it off with your fingers because it is not sterile since it’s full of dirt, oils, bacteria, and dead skin . You don’t want to rub it deeper into your eye.
Just use a washcloth with warm water to wash the gunk off of your eyes since that’s the most sanitary method.
When is eye crust not normal?
When the color of the discharge is yellow or green that would indicate a bacterial or viral infection. If you’re experiencing large amounts of eye discharge, that could mean that you have allergies because pollen in the air can get sweeped into your eye from yoru eyelashes and cause your eye to make more mucus discharge.
Contact lens wearers get more mucus produced around their eye too because technically you have a object that isn’t suppose to be there in your eyeballs all day. Even if they fit right and you keep your eyes moist, they can still cause your eyes to make more discharge.
There’s a problem when you get so much discharge throughout the day that your eyes are almost glued together, or if you get eye crusts when you haven’t slept yet. Inflammation of the eyelids called Blepharitis can cause this and all you can really do is wash it away with a warm washcloth, and see an eye doctor where they can treat your eyes.
Who knew that sleepy crusty eyes were made out of so many different little components of dead cells and bacteria and discharge and dirt? It’s not exactly pleasant, but now it makes even more sense when doctors advise people not to rub their eyes and to wash your hands frequently because you don’t want that old bacteria and dirt traveling to different parts of your skin and body.
