Dermatology: Removing a cerebriform nevus on the scalp

This patient saw me this week, and she told me about this bump on her scalp during the last few minutes of her appointment. I think she was scared to have it removed, but as you can see it is pretty simple to remove a bump like this, and it should be a pretty painless procedure, taking only minutes to do. Okay, maybe not as simple as I thought in this particular case, since I had to use a couple of different methods to remove it! But it will look so much better once the area has healed, we will send the tissue for biopsy to confirm that it was a benign growth (I’m pretty positive it is benign), and I don’t think people will be able to detect there was ever a bump there in the first place!
A cerebriform nevus is just a mole that has a bumpy, gyrate surface that resembles a brain..hence the name. They are fleshy, wobbly, flesh colored, benign growths that don’t have to be removed. However, they commonly occur on the scalp and are easily snagged on a hairbrush or even if you run your fingers through your hair.
