Excision of two cysts on the neck. For medical education- NSFE.
For medical education- NSFE. This is my lovely patient who had the big blackheads on her back that we extracted a month ago. As you can see she is such a sweet woman, who loves to tell stories. And she has allowed us to film her amazing blackheads and cysts!
She returns today so that I may excise the two cysts on the right side of her neck. The posterior (second) one has been squeezed repeatedly by her, and so there is some scarring present. The anterior (first) one was excised almost completely intact. The sacs of these epidermoid cysts should be removed entirely to ensure that these cysts don’t recur.
Cysts contain macerated keratin, essentially skin cells that are trapped within the sac and can accumulate which is why the cyst grows in size. Cysts don’t have to be removed, they are not life threatening. However, if they get inflamed and infected this is painful and can lead to permanent scarring and cyst recurrence.
