A small cyst on the cheek removed via punch biopsy
This is a patient I see on a regular basis for skin exams, and she had this noticeable bump on her right cheek that she says has been there for a while, and every now and then she can squeeze the contents out.
This is an epidermoid cyst, a benign growth that creates a sac under the skin the contains macerated keratin (skin cells). It can grow and shrink, but it likely won’t go away until the entire sac is removed either by excision, or if it gets inflamed and infected and the entire cyst sac is destroyed.
Here I use a small punch biopsy to make the initial incision, I squeeze the cyst and remove the entire sac and its contents before I place a few sutures to close the wound.
