Plantar Warts on my kids’ feet

Happy Tuesday to you all!

Yes, my kids had plantar warts, which is a very common condition (I had a couple warts on my hand when I was their age). My father is a dermatologist, and I remember him treating MY warts when I was their age with liquid nitrogen, and I guess I’m keeping up with tradition here!
Plantar warts, verruca plana, are caused by a virus and a particular subtype of verruca virus likes to cause warts on the feet. Like all warts, they are difficult to eradicate because they are caused by a virus, and this virus is essentially “under the radar” of our immune system. If you are a healthy person with a normal immune system, eventually your body “figures it out” and gets rid of the wart/virus, but the problem is that you don’t know when this will happen. This, by the way, is why younger people tend to get more warts in general than older people – because when we are older our body has already been exposed to the wart virus, recognizes it and doesn’t let it grow. Which is why I can touch the warts with my hands (even though they are “contagious”), but I don’t get warts myself (knock on wood!!:)).
My kids are scared (as most children are in general, of seeing the doctor), and I don’t know if it’s better or worse that their doctor is also their mother!
So, I probably speak to them a little different than I do my regular patients. I’m more stern and I tell them to “suck it up”, which I wouldn’t do to a regular patient (hehe). They did great though, and they let me film their treatment. My apologies in advance, because part of the video my 9 year old holds the camera. I think you can figure out which part of the video this is…

Thank you so much for watching and have a fabulous day!
